Unicorn Overlord Carvings Order: How the Puzzle Works
The stone carving quests in Unicorn Overlord look like a combination puzzle and are not one. Each region hands you a journal that states the order, and the quest log repeats it. This page explains the shared structure, the rule the sequences are built on, and the regional lists the captured sources actually document.
Every captured region uses the same shape: investigate a ruin, read the journal, then interact with four carvings in the order the journal gives. You do not have to test combinations, because the quest log states the activation order. Cornia runs Minotaur, Mermaid, Gryphon, Unicorn and Bastorias runs Rat, Eagle, Wolf, Bear, with two independent sources each; Drakenhold and Elheim sequences come from one walkthrough each.

How the Stone Carving Order Works
Every region in the carving quest line has one Overworld Quest built the same way. You investigate a specific ruin, pick up a journal, and the journal names four carved stones together with the sequence to touch them in. From there the job is travel rather than deduction: find the carvings and interact with each in turn, and the last interaction reveals a hidden treasure.
The important consequence is that a carving sequence is information you are given, not information you solve. A commenter in a player thread captured on 2026-09-26 makes the point directly, observing that the map already labels the carvings and that the quest log tells you which order to activate them in. Game8's Cornia walkthrough shows the same thing as an objective line, listing the goal as examining all four carvings in order. That is why recorded player complaints are about finding the journals, not about cracking a sequence.
One precondition is shared across the sets. The carving quests need Yahna, who joins through the main quest The Ravaged Swamp and reads the ancient text on the stones. Game8 states this for Cornia, and the IGN walkthroughs state it for Cornia, Drakenhold, Elheim and Bastorias, which makes it the one line this page treats as settled across regions. The caveat is that the second, genuinely independent confirmation only covers Cornia.
The Method That Works in Any Region
The same five moves apply to every set. The regional pages fill in the landmark names for their own area.
Get Yahna into the army
Progress the main quest The Ravaged Swamp until Yahna joins the Liberation Army. Without her, the ancient text on the carvings cannot be read.
Find that region's starting ruin
Each region has its own. Cornia's is east of Grupont Town; the other three are described on the regional pages.
Read the journal
The journal gives the four carving types and the order. Game8 records Cornia's as Faded Journal 3, a detail no other capture repeats.
Cross-check the quest log
The log restates the activation order, which is how you verify yourself without leaving the area you are already in.
Touch the four carvings in order
The final interaction reveals the treasure and closes the quest, paying the region's weapon plus five Honors and 1000g.
The Rule the Sequences Are Built On
The sequences are not arbitrary animal lists. A region names a property, and the player is meant to order the animals by it. In Bastorias the property is size: the walkthrough records the in-game hint as examining the stones from the smallest animal to the largest, and a commenter in the player thread reports the same instruction. The order Rat, Eagle, Wolf, Bear follows that property, which is what makes the hint a usable cross-check when you know the four names but not the sequence.
That is also where the captured support stops. No source in this batch states a decoding property for Cornia, Drakenhold or Elheim, so a reader holding those four names without their order has no recorded rule to apply and should use the journal and quest log instead. This page does not guess a property for those sets.
Recorded Orders by Region
The table lists the regions covered by the captures made on 2026-09-26 and how strong the evidence is for each sequence. It describes what was captured, not how many sets the game contains.
| Region | Recorded order | Evidence in this capture |
|---|---|---|
| Cornia | Minotaur, Mermaid, Gryphon, Unicorn | Two independent sources, a walkthrough and a guide site, agree item for item |
| Bastorias | Rat, Eagle, Wolf, Bear | Two independent sources agree item for item |
| Drakenhold | Scorpion, Reaper, Cockatrice, Wyvern | One walkthrough; no second source was recovered |
| Elheim | Faerie, Cerberus, Spectre, Golem | One walkthrough; no second source was recovered |
Cornia in Detail
Cornia is the set the captures cover twice, so it is the one worth spelling out. The quest starts at the ruins east of Grupont Town. Game8 calls the object a tower and notes that examining it yields Faded Journal 3; the walkthrough simply calls it ruins east of Grupont Town, so both descriptions are recorded here rather than one being chosen. With Yahna present, the text can be read and the quest begins.
The Cornia payout recorded by both sources is the sword Kingsblade Cornix, five Honors and 1000g, with the walkthrough describing the sword as raising all stats by 5.
- Minotaur carving: south from Fort Épine Morceaux, in northern Cornia.
- Mermaid carving: north of Fontille Harbor.
- Gryphon carving: west of Lebouge Hamlet, in the swamp used by the main quest The Ravaged Swamp.
- Unicorn carving: north of Lis de Prairie Village.
What Happens If You Go Out of Order
This is the one mechanical question the captures answer weakly. Game8's Cornia page warns that the carvings should be examined in order so as not to reset the quest. No other captured page repeats that warning, and no capture explains what a reset would mean in practice, whether progress clears outright or whether you simply start again from the first carving. The safe reading of the captured material is that going in order is what the game asks for, and that the severity of getting it wrong is not documented.
If you have lost the thread, the recorded remedy is the quest log rather than trial and error. Drakenhold's journal is the one journal problem with a second source: two captures place it in the southern desert, southwest of Nestascheft Town, which is the only journal location outside Cornia that this batch cross-checks.
Where the Per-Carving Detail Lives
Placements, prerequisite quests and rewards for individual sets are on the regional pages for Bastorias, Drakenhold and Elheim. Each of them applies the rule described here, and none of them repeats this page's rule text. For the other overworld collecting system in the game, our treasure maps overview explains how maps are dug up and read, and the cemetery locations page covers the Sharon collectible.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a fixed order for the stone carvings?
Yes. Each region's journal gives a sequence of four carvings and the quest log restates it. Cornia and Bastorias each have two independent sources for their sequence; Drakenhold and Elheim have one each in this capture.
What happens if I examine a carving out of order?
One guide site's Cornia page warns that failing to go in order resets the quest. That claim appears on that page alone in this capture and is not confirmed for other regions, so this wiki does not extend it.
Do I need Yahna to start the carving quests?
The captures describe her as the character who reads the ancient text on the carvings, and Game8 plus the walkthroughs tie her to the start of the quests. Only Cornia's requirement carries a genuinely independent second confirmation.
Where is the Cornia carving journal?
East of Grupont Town, at the ruin Game8 describes as a tower. Examining it gives Faded Journal 3, and Yahna's presence lets the text be read so the quest can begin.
